From medical marvel to skincare breakthrough, exosomes are quickly becoming the next big thing in regenerative beauty. Once used in clinical therapies, these powerful cellular messengers are now making waves in skin rejuvenation, rivalling the buzz once reserved for peptides and growth factors. Welcome to the next era in skincare innovation.

What are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny, cell-derived vesicles - like biological “messenger bubbles” - released by cells to carry signals between them. They play a vital role in intercellular communication, helping to regulate regeneration, wound healing and cellular repair. Think of them as text messages sent between skin cells, delivering instructions for repair and renewal.

Exosomes in Skincare

Originally studied in medical science, exosomes are now revolutionising skincare. Found in both in-clinic treatments and topical skincare formulas like exosome serums, these advanced vesicles can be derived from plant, animal, microbes, or synthetic sources. Crucially, not all exosomes are created equal; their source determines the messages they carry. In the UK and EU, using human-derived exosomes in cosmetic products is banned, and at Medik8 our exosomes are vegan (certified by The Vegan Society to be formulated without animal-derived ingredients or by-products), ethically sourced from plants and microorganisms.

Exosomal skincare products can provide a wide range of benefits, including supporting skin regeneration, barrier repair, and collagen stimulation, depending on the type of exosomes it contains.

Phyto Exosomes: Plant-Based Exosomes
Phyto exosomes are plant-derived exosomes, extracted from resilient botanical sources such as tea leaves, fruits, herbs. The name “phyto” reflects their natural origin from plants. Often rich in antioxidants, growth factors, and other bioactives, they’re used in skincare to support hydration, barrier repair and cellular communication. As a natural, vegan-friendly option, phyto exosomes are becoming a go-to for gentle, regenerative formulations.

Exosome In-Clinic Treatments
Exosomes are widely used in clinical treatments like microneedling to accelerate recovery, reduce inflammation and boost skin regeneration. This in-clinic use, known as exosome therapy, has gained attention for its ability to visibly rejuvenate skin, paving the way for take-home skincare innovations.

By accelerating post-procedure recovery, exosomes can help to support healing, minimise downtime, and enhance treatment outcomes, leaving skin visibly calmer, stronger, and more rejuvenated after aesthetic procedures.

Despite the buzz surrounding human-derived exosomes, UK and EU cosmetic regulations maintain a strict ban on human-sourced ingredients for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes. This is a safety-first approach, due to the risk of cross-contamination and disease transmission.

What’s Better: Exosome Treatments or Products?
While in-clinic treatments offer intense results, topical exosome products provide daily, accessible skincare.

Benefits of Exosomes

They offer a unique, multi-faceted approach to skincare, delivering a range of benefits through their powerful cell-signalling abilities. The regenerative impact of exosomes help rejuvenate skin, promoting healing and renewal while addressing a variety of concerns. Whether combating fine lines, boosting hydration, or enhancing elasticity, exosomes offer holistic care, making them suitable for all skin types and needs.

What Sets Exosomes Apart from Other Regenerative Ingredients?

In the ever-evolving world of regenerative skincare, exosomes are emerging as the next frontier - going beyond the capabilities of traditional actives. Unlike ingredients that target a single concern, exosomes deliver multi-functional cellular signals that help optimise the skin’s natural repair and regeneration processes. This unique mechanism allows them to support a wide range of skin goals at once, from calming sensitivity to restoring radiance and smoothing visible lines. With their advanced bio-communication abilities and versatility, exosomes stand out as a truly cutting-edge approach to total skin rejuvenation.

Can Exosomes Be Used with Vitamin C?

Yes, exosomes can be used with vitamin C, and they work beautifully together. While vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress and brightens the skin, exosomes support regeneration and repair. Combined, they offer a synergistic effect, helping to smooth, firm, and strengthen the skin barrier for visibly healthier, more radiant skin.

Medik8 harnesses this intelligent combination in their latest innovation: C-Tetra Advanced.

FAQ's

Are exosomes suitable for all skin types?

Yes, especially when derived from plant-based sources. Phyto exosomes are gentle, non-irritating, and well-tolerated even by sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Are exosomes safe for the face?

At Medik8 we only source vegan exosomes (certified by The Vegan Society to be formulated without animal-derived ingredients or by-products), which have been extensively safety and efficacy tested. We will never use and do not condone the use of human-derived exosomes due to the inherent safety risks.

Are exosomes in skincare effective?

It depends on the specific exosome. At Medik8 we only source exosomes which have been extensively efficacy tested.

Can exosomes be absorbed through the skin?

Yes. Exosomes are nano-sized, naturally encapsulated ingredients which supports their ability to absorb into the skin.

Are exosomes in skincare derived from humans?

Not at Medik8. While some in-clinic treatments outside the UK and EU use human-derived exosomes, UK and EU cosmetic regulations ban ingredients of human origin in skincare because of the risk of cross-contamination and disease transmission. At Medik8, we only use vegan exosomes (certified by The Vegan Society to be formulated without animal-derived ingredients or by-products). We will never use human-derived exosomes.

How are exosomes extracted for skincare?

Plant (phyto) exosomes are isolated from botanical sources such as green tea leaves, pomegranate and centella, while microbial exosomes are produced through fermentation. The exosomes are then separated and purified from the surrounding material, so only these tiny messenger vesicles, with their proteins, lipids and signalling molecules, are carried into the formula. This controlled process helps keep them stable, consistent and safe for topical use.
