Unlock the Full Power of Vitamin C With the Right Combinations
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that brightens the skin, boosts radiance, and supports collagen production. It helps neutralise free radicals in the environment, protecting the skin from aggressors that contribute to premature ageing. With extensive clinical research supporting its efficacy, vitamin C is widely regarded as a well-tolerated active suitable for most skin types.
It also layers well with other active skincare ingredients. When applied underneath sunscreen, vitamin C can enhance its protective benefits, and its versatility makes it easy to incorporate into almost any skincare routine.
Why pairing ingredients with vitamin C correctly matters
It’s important to apply your vitamin C product at the right step in your skincare routine. As a general rule, products should be applied in order of viscosity—starting with the lightest textures and finishing with the thickest. Vitamin C is best applied after cleansing and toning, and before moisturiser and SPF.
Because vitamin C is highly compatible with many other skincare ingredients, it’s easy to incorporate into your routine. While it can be used alongside most actives, we recommend separating it from retinol/retinal for optimal results. Both can be used on the same day, but we advise following our clinically proven CSA Philosophy®: vitamin C and sunscreen during the day, and vitamin A at night.
For brightening: vitamin C and niacinamide
Vitamin C is well known for its brightening capabilities as it works to reduce the dark spots, boost radiance, and protects the skin from environmental damage. Niacinamide is the perfect companion as it strengthens the skin barrier, improves moisture retention and helps regulate excess melanin production, to create a more luminous complexion.
For hydration: vitamin C and hyaluronic acid
Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are highly complementary ingredients. Both leave skin looking firmer, dewier, and more resilient. Using hyaluronic acid and vitamin C together delivers complementary benefits: vitamin C brightens the complexion and supports collagen production, while hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, helping to plump the skin and smooth fine lines. The good news is that they’re equally compatible whether you’re using a water-based vitamin C (like L-ascorbic acid) or an oil-based vitamin C (such as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate). You can apply each ingredient separately, or try C-Tetra Cream, which combines both and is suitable for daily use.
For boosting potency: vitamin C and ferulic acid
Vitamin C and ferulic acid are fantastic skincare ingredients to combine because they enhance each other’s effectiveness. Ferulic acid is a potent plant-based antioxidant that stabilises vitamin C and makes it work harder and for longer. Together, they improve the appearance of uneven tone and fine lines, and create a smoother, more resilient complexion. Super C Ferulic brightens and evens out skin tone in just 7 days[1].
For enhanced antioxidant protection: vitamin C and vitamin E
Both are highly effective skincare ingredients on their own, but vitamin C and E are even more powerful when combined. Vitamin E is a nourishing antioxidant that helps strengthen the skin barrier, lock in moisture, and soothe dryness. When used together, vitamin E helps stabilise vitamin C and enhances its antioxidant performance, while vitamin C helps regenerate vitamin E, providing stronger protection against free radical damage, improving skin texture, and leaving skin looking smoother, healthier, and more resilient over time. Daily Radiance Vitamin C, the C-Tetra range, and Super C Ferulic all contain both powerhouse ingredients. For those looking to strengthen their skin's natural defenses, a barrier-boosting regime can be particularly beneficial in supporting these protective functions.
For UV protection: vitamin C and SPF
Did you know that vitamin C boosts the effectiveness of SPF when worn together? Vitamin C can help prevent free radical damage that sunscreen alone can’t. Combine that with the skin protection that SPF provides, and you’ve got an essential pairing for daily daytime skincare routines, which is why they make up two elements of our CSA Philosophy®.
For collagen support: vitamin C and peptides
Peptides are generally well-tolerated and pair well with most ingredients, but especially vitamin C as they both help promote a radiant complexion and support collagen production to improve firmness and elasticity. Apply vitamin C in the morning, followed by a peptide moisturiser such as Daily Radiance Vitamin C.
For age-defying power: vitamin C and retinoids
Both vitamin C and retinoids are highly effective for treating hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C inhibits the production of melanin and protects the skin from sun damage. Retinol promotes cell turnover, helping to fade dark spots and even out skin tone.
It’s a good idea to use both, but at separate times of the day. Apply vitamin C in the morning to brighten and protect the skin, and use retinol at night. And remember to apply sunscreen during the day.
For barrier repair: vitamin C and ceramides
This is the ingredient pairing that anyone with dry, sensitive, or a compromised skin barrier, that want to boost glow, needs. Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier, lock in moisture, and prevent water loss, and vitamin C brightens the skin, supports collagen production and protects the skin from environmental aggressors. When used together, you get all the glow-inducing benefits without any compromise to the skin.
Using vitamin C and acids together
Vitamin C and exfoliating acids can work well together to brighten skin and improve texture, but they require careful use. Acids help remove dead skin cells, allowing vitamin C to penetrate more effectively. However, combining them incorrectly may cause redness or sensitivity. The best way to avoid irritation is to use them at different times of day, favouring vitamin C during the day and acids at night, or on alternate days, start with lower concentrations, and prioritise hydration and sunscreen. Always patch test and avoid applying to compromised or inflamed skin.
There are lots of acids that work well with vitamin C:
Lactic acid - is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), it gently exfoliates while supporting the barrier, making it suitable for dry, sensitive complexions types.
Glycolic acid - another AHA, but with deeper exfoliation properties to improve texture, tone, and clarity. Sensitive skins may find it too much to pair with vitamin C.
Azelaic acid - reduces redness and pigmentation while calming inflammation, making it ideal for rosacea-prone or sensitive skin types daily. It is generally compatible with vitamin C.
Salicylic acid - penetrates pores to dissolve oil, unclog congestion, and reduce breakouts, ideal for oily, acne-prone skin types and blackheads, but can cause dryness if used alongside vitamin C.
Mandelic acid - has a larger molecule size, which means it penetrates more slowly into the skin. Because of this, it offers gentle exfoliation with antibacterial benefits, suiting sensitive, darker skin tones and first-time acid users seeking low-irritation options.
What not to use with vitamin C
While vitamin C pairs very well with many ingredients, a few combinations are best approached with care.
Benzoyl peroxide (found in many high-strength spot treatments) can oxidise vitamin C, potentially deactivating its benefits.
Essential oils or heavily fragranced products can increase the risk of skin sensitivity when layered with vitamin C.
High-strength exfoliating acids may also heighten irritation. It’s always best to apply a little amount and see if any skin sensitivity occurs.
Vitamin C boosting ingredients
Because vitamin C is a fairly unstable ingredient, other skincare actives can help stabilise and enhance its efficacy. Ferulic acid is one of the most effective stabilisers, protecting vitamin C from oxidation while boosting antioxidant power. Vitamin E also works in synergy with vitamin C, improving photoprotection and enhancing efficacy.

Maximise your vitamin C routine with confidence
Vitamin C is a powerful skincare ingredient on its own, but when paired with other skincare ingredients, it works harder to brighten, protect, and strengthen the skin. And smart layering doesn’t need to be complicated; our CSA Philosophy® simplifies the process by focusing on three effective steps: vitamin C and SPF by day, vitamin A by night. To make it even easier, Medik8’s vitamin C range offers multiple expertly formulated options, each designed with compatible ingredients that enhance vitamin C’s stability, efficacy, and performance for visible, long-term results.
They can be used together but if you have sensitive skin, and it causes you irritation, use just one at a time.
It’s important you apply vitamin C, and all skincare products, in the correct order. If you apply vitamin C over a thicker cream this will inhibit its absorption. Ensure you apply products from lightest to thickest to maximise results.
Absolutely. They work really well together.
Yes, you can. They work in harmony with each other and both help brighten skin, improve texture and boost glow. If the combination causes any irritation, use one at a time.
Both are very effective and deliver different skin goals so can’t really be compared. They are also best applied at different times of the day so there’s no reason why you can’t use both. Apply vitamin C during the day to brighten and use vitamin A (retinol/ retinal) in the evening to firm, smooth and rejuvenate the skin.
They are both beneficial for dry skin but do different things, so the ‘better’ option depends on your skin goals. Vitamin E is very hydrating and reduces water loss in the skin, whereas vitamin C is also hydrating but will improve the texture of the skin and make dry skin look brighter.
