An Anti-Ageing Brand
That Thinks Like a Natural Brand
At Medik8, we are making huge strides to improve our sustainability in every way. Our ultimate goal? To be 'the world's most sustainable professional-led skincare brand'. To get to this long-term goal, we started at our roots - our professional range and therapist community who perform our treatments every day, across the world. We've incorporated Post Consumer Recycled Plastic (PCR) into our professional bottles, use 40% recycled glass, no pure palm oil in any of products, all our formulas are 100% vegan-friendly. The list goes on.
Never Testing on Animals
Of course ethically, and as per the strict requirements of European regulation, we do not test on animals. We will not ask any other company to test on our behalf. We take the matter of checking our supplier compliance very seriously as an integral part of our product development process. We look forward to the day when animal testing is banned worldwide forever. Read more about our product testing policy here.
As a brand rooted in science and nature, we love and respect sea life. That’s why we are 100% microbead-free and have been for years. Instead of using plastic beads which are damaging to marine life, we only use natural exfoliators such as jojoba beads found in Pore Refining Scrub™ and bamboo micro-exfoliators as found in Brightening Powder Cleanse™.
In 2018 we removed all plastic inserts from our cartons and replaced them with 100% recycled card, making our cartons completely recyclable. This saves over 3 tonnes of plastic every year.
We are working on using ocean-derived plastic bottles in our professional range in the near future. Chart our progress on this and other sustainable projects here.
When it comes to paper-based materials, not only are we recyclable, we are MADE of mostly recycled materials. Medik8 use FSC certified card for all of our cartons, which means it has been sourced from well-managed forests or recycled sources. You will see the FSC symbol on all of our packaging as a mark of dedication to the cause. We try to minimise paper waste in our cartons to be as eco-friendly as possible. But it's not just our cartons, read more about all our recycling efforts here.
We love using glass. All of our serum bottles are made from glass. All of our pipettes are made from glass. Since 2018, Medik8 glass bottles contain 40% recycled glass and we are looking to increase this number in the near future. You can track our progress on this and our other sustainability initiatives here.
LEADING IN RECYCLED PLASTIC
Since results always come first at Medik8, it’s unavoidable that some of our formulas require plastic packaging in order to remain stable and active. But wherever we can implement eco-friendly packaging, we will try. One of our primary focuses is to increase use of recycled materials. We've started with our professional range. Read all about our Post Consumer Recycled Plastic project here.
ACTION ON PALM OIL
Palm Oil is a very emotive subject and one close to our hearts at Medik8. Millions of acres of palm forest, their habitats and wildlife have been devastated by our need for this precious ingredient used across so many industries, including skincare. At Medik8, we have carried out a huge audit of all of our ingredients to ensure we are 100% pure palm oil-free. Read more about our story here.
SMART MATERIALS. LESS WASTE - WE HATE WASTE
Everyone talks about recycling. And so do we. However, the best way to help our environment is not to solely recycle, but to use less in the first place. That's why we think digital first. Whenever we create some content about the brand, we really think about if it needs printing or not. We actively decided to keep a lot of information digital to help preserve our environment. For example, our Therapists' Training Manual is fully digital; so no printing out of hefty big binders of paper that are out of date as soon as they are printed. We also have a comprehensive website packed with useful information, so that we need to print that little bit less for in-clinic use. We're really cutting down everywhere: you'll notice our boxes are smaller; even the cardboard is thinner. We removed cartons for our products where we didn't deem them necessary eg many of our cleansers are deliberately boxless. In many ways, recycling is actually the last resort to help our environment. Re-use or complete non-use are our first considerations.
WE LOVE VEGANS!
Veganism has gathered pace over the last decade. It's not about being 'trendy' but about saving precious resources and finding alternatives that love and respect the animal world we live in. Did you know every product manufactured by Medik8 is now 100% vegan-friendly? Read more about it here.
Our buildings are run from 100% renewable energy sources. Green chemistry is the science of making products using an energy efficient process; from the sourcing of ingredients to initial research and final manufacturing. We use cold processes during manufacturing wherever possible. This means many of our formulas can be blended at room temperature. Heating large amounts of product for blending requires a lot of energy, so we try to avoid this if we can during the blending process.
Clean & Skin Safe
As experts in results-driven skincare, we know what to add in and what to keep out. There are so many ingredients used in skincare which aren’t necessary, we try to strip back our formulations where we can. We don’t regard ourselves as ‘chemical-free’, even vitamin C is considered a chemical, but we leave out any ingredients which could cause concern e.g. SLS, parabens, phthalates. See here for more details.
We only make products for ourselves. Even so, we are proud to tell you that we are certified ISO 22716 for Cosmetic Manufacturing, plus, ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems which includes our commitment to excellent customer service.
This is completely voluntary, and is a great burden on our time but we think it's vital for any technology company to have regular external audits to keep quality and precision high.
THE ZIPPER FOUNDATION
At Medik8, we strive to create innovative formulations and treatments that impact the skincare industry. Likewise, we believe that it is undeniably important to support charitable organisations that have an incredible positive impact on those in need. Rather than choose just 1 charity each year, and in addition to continued support for Cancer Research UK, we have launched The Zipper foundation in early 2019. A charitable foundation dedicated solely to animal welfare with six categories. Click below for more information.
