Frequently Asked Questions

What is retinol, and how does it benefit the skin?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A known for its youth-renewing and skin-renewing properties. Once applied, retinol is converted by the skin into retinoic acid, where it stimulates cell regeneration and collagen production, visibly improving skin texture and reducing signs of ageing. Learn more about retinol in our guide.

How do I start using retinol products in my routine?

If you're new to retinol, we recommend starting with a lower strength retinol serum, such as 0.3% or 0.6%, to allow your skin to build tolerance. Apply in the evening after cleansing, then follow with your moisturiser as part of your skincare routine. Gradually increase frequency as your skin adjusts.

Can I use retinol if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, but it’s important to introduce it slowly and choose the right formula. Retinol can be transformative, but it may irritate if not used correctly, especially on sensitive skin.

Start with a low-strength retinol or, even better, try retinaldehyde, a gentler, yet more advanced form of vitamin A. At Medik8, we encapsulate our vitamin A molecules to ensure a slow, controlled release into the skin, helping to minimise sensitivity while still delivering visible results.

We also recommend following the “low and slow” approach: apply two to three times a week initially, then gradually increase frequency as your skin builds tolerance. Always follow with moisturiser, and use SPF every morning. With the right formula and a little patience, even sensitive skin can enjoy the age-defying benefits of vitamin A.

How long does it take to see results from using retinol?

With consistent use, you may start noticing improvements in skin texture and tone within 4-6 weeks. For more significant reductions in fine lines and wrinkles, it can take up to 12 weeks. Patience is key, and it’s important to use sunscreen during the day to protect your skin.

Which Medik8 retinol product is best for beginners?

For retinol starters, we recommend Medik8's Intelligent Retinol 3TR, which contains 0.3% retinol. It's a gentle yet effective introduction to vitamin A, helping to improve skin tone and texture with minimal irritation.
