Medik8 uses airless packaging, where appropriate,
to ensure that the integrity of the product is not
compromised. This is because in certain cream and
aqueous formulations it is important to keep the active
ingredients away from oxygen in the air, as this would
lead to product degradation. Tubes can be suitable
alternatives. For oil or anhydrous formulae, glass
bottles perform best. For cleansers and hydrators,
HDPE offers the best packaging solution. The use of
airless packaging also limits the amount of preservatives
required.

Parabens are excellent preservatives but have come under some fire over safety in recent years. While Medik8 scientists share the EU view and that of Breast Cancer charities that Parabens are safe, Medik8 promised to remove Parabens subject to the ‘precautionary principle’. Considering the complexity of re-testing for stability, compatibility and microbiology of each formula, this is an arduous task. Medik8 will be completely paraben-free by the end of 2009. Over 95% of products are already paraben free (January 2009). Medik8 cleansers are all free of sulphates and harsh detergents which are potentially irritating.

'Perfume-Free' means that no artificial fragrances have been used within a formulation. Instead, Medik8 have selected essential oils that not only fragrance the formula, but also offer additional benefits to the product.
